Vicki Baughman, an NBC News reporter who covers the criminal justice system, told The Cut that she was in Harlem's Maple restaurant and decided to use the bathroom around 7:00 PM on Tuesday when she noticed the older white man sitting alone in the men's room.
"I was taken aback when I walked in there," Baughman told The Cut.

"He was sitting there reading a book and smoking a cigarette, and he kind of had the look of, 'Who the hell are you? Why are you in here?'"
She said she then heard footsteps coming from the restroom and the older man "jumped up and looked like he was going to say something."
"I was kind of like, 'Shit, I'm in the wrong restroom,'" Baughman said. "And then I kind of looked at him and I said, 'Hey, why are you in here?' And he just like kind of looked at me like he was like, 'What, am I on camera? Am I in trouble?'"
When Baughman tried to come to the conclusion that the older man must be waiting for someone, the man looked at her and said, "My friend's inside waiting on me."
"And I said, 'Your friend's in there? OK,'" Baughman said. "And he told me my friend was called in and that was that."
"I didn't see anybody else in the restroom at the time," she added. "The whole time I was there, he was the only person."
